Art in the Embassy

Art in the EmbassyDominican art has its historical roots in ‘Taino’ pictographs, which were drawn with simple lines and vegetable pigments on rock walls and ceramic.  After the Dominican Independence in 1844, the artists followed a trend of developing the national identity through portraits of patriots and paintings of the countryside. Further artistic influences came from European artists who settled in the Dominican Republic at the beginning of the 20th century. The migration of many Dominican artists to destinations worldwide also contributed to strengthening the variety and diversity of our national art.

Painting has the deepest roots in Dominican society. For many years, it has one of the most popular artistic disciplines in the visual arts. Photography on the other hand has a more recent history. It has reached such a wide audience and attracted so many followers in our country that we also feel compelled to display at the Embassy.
All the artworks displayed at the Embassy consists of works by acclaimed master practitioners as well as established artists living in the Dominican Republic and elsewhere who have tackled a variety of topics and techniques exploring Dominican nationhood as well as other more universal concepts.

Most of the artists featured below have been recognized in the National Biennial of Visual Arts, and have received awards that have played an important role in developing and strengthening their careers. Take a glance at the creativity, spanning the full range of media, from photography, Oil, Acrylic and mixed media paintings.
